Fee: €25 Standard ticket, which includes a Moth Swatch. Swatches can be collected from the tutor on the morning of the event.
Together with butterflies, moths are categorised within the insect order Lepidoptera, and in Ireland some 1,500 species have been recorded to date. Participants will be given a brief introduction to the biology and ecology of moths in general in this workshop before focusing on the practice of how to go about finding, identifying and recording moths, macro-moths in particular. Weather depending, we will take visit OPW Fota Gardens where we have set up overnight traps to see firsthand how to monitor and record common moths.
Lunch: Please bring a packed lunch. Or alternatively, lunch can be purchased at the local café.
Clothing: Sturdy walking boots or wellingtons. Please dress appropriately for the weather and outdoor terrain.
Health & Safety: Please be mindful that this workshop includes an element of teaching outdoors, weather depending. Warm waterproof clothing and good walking footwear are essential. As a rule of thumb, it is generally expected that any participants who sign up for a workshop that involves spending time in the outdoors will own and bring the appropriate outdoor clothing. A risk assessment for this event has been completed and participants are asked to listen carefully to the safety briefings that are delivered on the day.
